on Black history as context for Black art

In the wake of The Medgar Evers Incident, in which I acquired a small ego wound by admitting I don’t know everything, I have been given a list of documentaries on Black history. The point of Project Poetry is to consume art, not to acquire knowledge, but art needs context. You need to know the Bible to understand Paradise Lost. I’m beginning to get that I need to know Black history in the United States to understand some of what I’m encountering.

10 Must-Watch Black History Documentaries

We begin with Eyes on the Prize. It appears to be a six-episode series I can watch on Amazon. I’m also told it’s available on iTunes. I have a cross-country flight coming up next week … maybe this is what I’ll be doing on the plane.
